About
Dutch Oven
University

In 1984, when Julie first met Greg Miklaszewicz, he had been cooking with cast iron skillets for some time. He also had a collection of cast iron skillets of different sizes hanging on the wall of his house.

As Julie loved looking at his beautiful cast iron hanging on the wall, she began purchasing some for her household use, at garage sales and flea markets.

Years later, when the Miklaszewicz' bought their first recreational vehicle, Julie and Greg decided that cast iron was the way to go to cook "outdoors."

For a Christmas present that year, Greg purchased two Dutch ovens for Julie. Dutch Ovens do not come from Holland, but were first sold and manufactured by Pennsylvania Dutch traveling merchants. The name "Dutch oven" came from the peddlers showing and selling their wares.

When the Miklaszewicz' are at a campground these days, and Julie is "making magic" outside over the open fire or charcoal, the aromatic scent in the air, draws other rv'ers to their site. Conversations and questions always begin, as the smell of good food and good times always brings people closer together.

In January of 2008, Julie was approached by the Abbotsford School District to teach Dutch oven cooking classes as part of the school district's community outreach program. Julie then created a website, www.dutchovenuniversity.com, after a very good friend and mentor suggested to both Julie and Greg that they record her Dutch oven cooking classes and share these with others who cannot make it to the classes.

Julie loves her Dutch ovens and enjoys sharing her knowledge of ALL cast iron cooking: skillets, ovens, pie pans, biscuit makers, etc.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more about cast iron cooking, please feel free to e-mail Julie.
